Free Dutch settlement agreement review: where expats and English-speakers can get legal help in the Netherlands
Walking the legal points yourself is a start. For WW wording, illness and a non-compete you want someone who reads the VSO against your contract, in English if that is the language you actually use. That can happen without you paying the bill.
Where can I get my settlement reviewed for free?
Four usual routes, in this order:
- Your union (FNV, CNV, De Unie and similar) if you are already a member.
- Legal-expenses insurance (rechtsbijstand) if you have a standing policy that covers employment law.
- A fee cap in the VSO itself — a Dutch employment-law firm reviews the draft and invoices the employer.
- Het Juridisch Loket for a first-line pass if your income is low.
None of these requires you to hire a lawyer on an hourly rate before you know whether the draft is even safe to sign. Use the cooling-off period if you already signed.
Do Dutch employment firms really charge the employer?
Yes, that is a normal clause, not a rumour. The VSO often includes a kostenvergoeding juridische bijstand: a fixed cap so your lawyer reviews the draft on your behalf. You pick the lawyer; the employer pays up to the agreed maximum. Ask for that line if it is missing — especially if you are an expat and need the review in English.
A “free VSO check” that is only a hook for a success-fee mandate is marketing, not a review. Ask what the check covers and what happens next before you send the document.
Can my union or legal insurer review at no cost?
Union. Membership usually includes a VSO review at no extra charge. They check the CAO, the transition payment and the WW sentence. There is often a waiting period; do not join and sign on the same afternoon.
Legal-expenses insurance. A standing policy often covers employment law, including a VSO review. Notify the insurer before you sign: many policies exclude a dispute that has already “arisen”. The insurer assigns a lawyer or firm.
